The major use of water in a petroleum refinery is for cooling. Moderate quantities of water are used for boiler feed, processing, sanitary services, fire protection, and miscellaneous purposes.
Before river or seawater can be used for cooling and process purposes, it has to be cleared of debris - sea weed, jelly fish, plastic, sand, etc. to prevent damage to pumps and condenser tubes.

Geiger's main applications in Refineries
This is where Aqseptence Group’s bar and mesh screening machines are used. Water intake structures may cause environmental impact by pulling large numbers of fish or their eggs into a power plant's cooling system.
To protect flora and fauna and fulfil environmental requirements, the Geiger® modified travelling water screens (with fish collection buckets, fish handling and return systems) are among the best available technology (BAT) for impingement reduction.

Filter presses operating in petroleum refineries typically need to be designed for use in hazardous areas. For these applications, Diemme® Filtration presses are ATEX certified.
